Madrid Startup House Foundation presented with VP of Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip
-
The Madrid Startup House Foundation was created to boost Madrid into an internationally recognised Digi-Tech and Startup-Friendly city
-
It began under the umbrella of the European Commission’s Digital Single Market initiative, as a pilot project soon to be developed in other cities
-
MSH was presented on 6 March 2017 with Vice-President of the Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip
On 6 March 2017, Madrid’s startup community gathered with Andrus Ansip, Vice-President of the Digital Single Market, for the presentation of the Madrid Startup House Foundation.
Throughout the meeting, the role that Madrid Startup House Foundation will play in overcoming the challenge of adapting to the Digital Single Market was discussed. The Digital Single Market is one of the European Commission’s key priorities: it aims to tear down regulatory barriers and create a more vibrant, connected and seamless European Digital Market.

The event was opened by Andrus Ansip, Vice-President of the Digital Single Market. He explained that Europe is full of creativity, that there are lots of good ideas, but that to scale-up in the European Union is difficult. He said that the Digital Single Market, is needed for everybody and will be really beneficial for startups. VP EC Ansip also highlighted the huge market potential we have in the EU, with 500 million customers, and how mobile applications are an incredible source of jobs which are often undervalued.
The event was chaired by Manuel Gago, Vice-President of the Spanish Confederation of Directors and Executives (Confederación Española de Directivos y Empresarios, ‘CEDE’). Focusing on the city level, Carlos Barrabés (Serial Entrepreneur, Barrabés.com) insisted on the importance of networks by claiming that Madrid Startup House is a really collaborative project, as it can count on the support of the people of Madrid and “it will include us in a greater European network‘.

Victor Teodosio, Co-Founder of Madrid Startup House Foundation (Hugin and Munin), introduced the concept of Madrid Startup House by saying that the idea was born through Startup Europe. He said, “Madrid is a city with a lot of activities for startups; there are a lot of resources, but they are widely dispersed. What is needed is a single entry point to connect all players in the ecosystem. The overall goal of Madrid Startup House is to position Madrid as an internationally recognised Digi-Tech and Startup-Friendly city, and connect to other markets such as the rest of Europe, the US and Latin America”.
Asier Basterretxea-Gomez, Co-Founder of Madrid Startup House Foundation (Socios Inversores), went on to explain the long-term goals of Madrid Startup House Foundation. He said, “Our goal is to position Madrid in the top ten digital cities in Europe by 2020, and to be in the top 5 by 2025. We want to inspire: we want to inspire digital talent, inspire people to invest in startups, and most importantly, inspire women and facilitate their route into entrepreneurship”.

Teresa Alarcos, Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, concluded the presentation of the initiative with a strong call to action, informing all participants that “We are now creating personalised sponsorship and partnership programmes for those that want to sponsor Madrid Startup House. Partnering with Madrid Startup House Foundation will not only boost your city of Madrid, but it will have a direct, positive impact on you too. ”
The decision to focus this initiative at a city level was also discussed. Isidro Laso, Head of the Startup Europe initiative at the European Commission, pointed out that, “We know via Startup Europe, that startups are a local phenomenon. It’s not even regional, it’s very local – on a city level”. He said, however, that “even within cities there can be several ecosystems co-existing. The target is to establish in these cities the homogenous structures where they do exist yet. The EU added value is then connecting all of these cities together”.
Asier Basterretxea-Gomez, Co-Founder of Madrid Startup House Foundation, also added that “The principles on which Madrid Startup House is based, its methodology, is such that it can then be transferred to other ecosystems, and become itself a white paper of best practices”.

Madrid presents new startup initiative with VP for Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip
On 6 March 2017, Vice-President for the Digital Single Market, Andrus Ansip, and Madrid’s most important financial, tech and startup players will gather for the presentation of the ‘Madrid Startup House’ Foundation
The Digital Single Market is one of the European Union’s key priorities. It aims to tear down regulatory barriers and create a more vibrant, connected and seamless European Digital Market.
But how can Spain, and its capital Madrid, confront the challenge of being part of a truly Digital Single Market?
Madrid is a city buzzing with entrepreneurship activities, both within the public and the private sphere, but often resources, connections and efforts are widely dispersed. What is needed is a single point to unify all activities and players, to strengthen the entrepreneurship scene and give the city’s startup community a platform for international reach to other ecosystems, like the United States.
Madrid Startup House was launched in November 2016 under the umbrella of the Digital Single Market, to do just this. Other platforms like this are foreseen to be created in other cities in Europe, such as Venice in Italy.
This 6 March 2017, Madrid’s most important financial, tech and startup actors will gather with Andrus Ansip, Vice-President for the Digital Single Market, as well as Isidro Laso, Head of the European Commission initiative ‘Startup Europe’ , for the presentation of the ‘Madrid Startup House’ Foundation.
Founders Hugin & Munin and Socios Inversores are enthusiastic about the impact that Madrid Startup House Foundation will have on Madrid, and Spain’s, ability to adapt to the Digital Single Market. Victor Teodosio (Hugin & Munin) states “With Madrid Startup House, we hope to provide a platform, under the umbrella of the European Commission, that strengthens the ecosystem as a whole.”

Startup Europe after 2 years!
Startup Europe has reached the two year mark. check out how our projects have been doing!
Together we have achieved some incredible things and truly boosted the European startup ecosystem, connecting people and helping startups to grow and thrive in Europe.
Highlights of Startup Europe
The Startup Europe projects have collectively connected the cities of Berlin, Madrid, Dublin, Rome, Lille, Warsaw, Brussels, Milan and many more!
An incredible +700 startups have participated in Startup Europe programmes, which have raised more than 200m€ in total.
One of Startup Europe’s strong points has been the sheer number of events that we have organised to create connections and help startups grow across Europe: over 300 events in two years.

More than just conferences, the Startup Europe projects have helped startups at these events to work through their tough spots and achieve their goals. Over 115 workshops, courses, hackathons, bootcamps and training sessions have been held for startups all over Europe, supporting them in every stage of growth. In particular, we have helped startups with that well-known growing pain- learning how to pitch and epitch. Over 240 epitching support sessions were organised to give startups the training they needed and to turn that 2 minutes with an investor into a golden opportunity.

For those startups that were ready to take the next step, the Startup Europe projects supported over 1300 pitches to business angels and corporates.
In fact, Startup Europe also organised well-thought-out matchmaking meetings between startups and investors, over 500 individual matchmakings between startups and investors all over Europe. Many were more than just boardroom conversations, in fact they were quite unique and ingenious (see WELCOME project’s meeting investors in cars post!).
Startup Europe also saw +160 startups join Startup Scaleup’s acceleration programme, in two waves of programmes.
One of the four key objectives of Startup Europe has been to help startups internationalise– and boy have we crossed oceans with you! From preparatory internationalisation sessions to giving startups the support they need to land in new ecosystems, Startup Europe has also crossed the atlantic with European startups to Silicon Valley. Two missions to Silicon Valley saw European startups travel to the USA to meet local giants like Google, get to know the ecosystem and test out the waters in the world’s most famous startup hub.
On an important note, one topic that many people are keen to see improved in Europe is the environment for women entrepreneurs. WeHubs, one of the Startup Europe projects, aimed to help women connect and gain the support and resources they need to become successful entrepreneurs, no matter where in Europe they are. WeHubs facilitated the creation of 34 women’s entrepreneur organisations, organised 20 mentors and registered over 330 female entrepreneurs.
Startup Europe also put efforts into encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs, specifically targeting students. Startup Europe Comes to Universities (SEC2U) saw it’s first year, in which more than 35 universities held entrepreneurships events for their students across 18 countries. The network is already accepting expressions of interest from Universities for next year- take a look here.

Other initiatives which Startup Europe prompted and supported are Startup Europe Comes to India, Startup Europe Week and European Maker Week.
A fair bit of research has also been conducted throughout the project, with over 25 publications being published on Europe’s startup and entrepreneurial environment.
Finally, our following on social media demonstrates the real impact of the Startup Europe initiative – 11,400 members in our Facebook community and 20,000 followers on twitter (13,000 tweets!).
CALL TO ACTION: if you have taken part in Startup Europe projects over those 2 years, make sure you fill out this Google Form, selected startups will be announced during the ‘Startup Europe After 2 Years conference’ in Brussels on 2nd February 2017. Roundup of the first ever SEC2U (Startup Europe Comes to Universities) week!
The first ever Startup Europe Comes to Universities (SEC2U) week has come to an end, with over 35 universities taking part, across 18 countries.
Startup Europe Comes to Universities (SEC2U) is a cross-border initiative that aims to showcase the commitment of European universities to create a culture of entrepreneurship and facilitate connection between the academic and entrepreneurial community.
In particular, it hopes to bring together universities, entrepreneurs, local government and local business people on university campuses across Europe. It is coordinated by the Startup Europe University Network and comes under the umbrella of Startup Europe, a European Commission initiative.
For this first edition of SEC2U, the participating universities hosted 38 different entrepreneurship events on their campuses, all during the same period, between 17th & 21st of October.
The grand opening
The first ever edition of SEC2U was kicked off on 17th October with an event in Brussels at the EBN.
