Press coverage: Irish start-up UrbanVolt recognised at prestigious Startup Europe Awards!

An Irish start-up has been named as a finalist in this year’s prestigious Startup Europe Awards.

Energy services company UrbanVolt has already been offered a national title in Ireland – and is now in line to win the overall European title.

Supported by the European Commission, the awards recognise firms who are transforming the business landscape across Europe.

“This accolade tops off an incredible year for UrbanVolt,” said CEO of UrbanVolt Kevin Maughan.

“In our first full year of business we have become the biggest lighting company in Ireland and we will save our initial customers over €20m on their lighting bills.

“With our Light as a Service model we have become the first energy efficiency service model that can truly deliver on carbon footprint reduction while remaining highly business friendly.”

The company – which was named Bank of Ireland Startup of the Year –  funds, fits and maintains LED lighting solutions for large commercial properties and shares the money saved by the business as a result.

Earlier this year UrbanVolt announced that it had signed a €30 million funding arrangement with SUSI Energy Efficiency Fund.

The overall winner of the Startup Europe Awards will be announced early next year.

Cork to be first location in Europe to host Startup Nations Summit

by John Kennedy

The city of Cork will be the first location in Europe to host the international Startup Nations Summit, which will take place during the 2016 Global Start-up Gathering in November.

The 2016 Global Start-up Gathering (GSG2016) will take place between 18 and 20 November. It aims to attract hundreds of international and national business people and would-be entrepreneurs in areas stretching from biotech to food, manufacturing, e-health, nutrition and technology.

The Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) Startup Nations Summit 2016 will take place on Saturday 19 November as part of the Global Gathering and will bring together the leaders of national entrepreneurship initiatives from over 80 countries.

‘The start-up spotlight will certainly be focused on Ireland, and particularly Cork, in November 2016’

This will be the first year that the Start-up Nations Summit will be held in Europe.

“In addition, Cork is the first location in Europe to host the international Start-up Nations Summit, which brings together policy makers, influencers and leaders in the start-up arena. The start-up spotlight will certainly be focused on Ireland, and particularly Cork, in November 2016.”

Speaking about Bank of Ireland’s sponsorship of the Global Start-up Gathering, David Merriman, head of Enterprise Development at the bank, said that the Startup Gathering, now in its second year, has evolved at an incredible pace.

“The start-up community is a strong priority for the bank and we are very committed to supporting new and emerging entrepreneurs as they grow and develop,” Merriman said.

“Bank of Ireland recognises how important it is for entrepreneurs to have opportunities to connect and learn from one another and GSG2016 offers an ideal platform for Ireland’s innovators to engage with peers and industry experts from across the globe.”

Siobhán Finn, project director of Cork Innovates and the Global Start-up Gathering 2016, said that the programme of events will include debate, discussions, pitches, workshops, immersion labs, networking and mentorship.

The ultimate aim, she said, will be to showcase Ireland’s start-up sector to a global audience.

SEA Alliance has been initiated within the StartUp Europe Awards, an initiative promoted by the European Commission and implemented by Finnova under the umbrella of the programme StartUp Europe. This initiative counts on the support of the president of the Committee of the Regions, Markkus Markkula, and DGs such as DG CONNECT, in charge of Networks and Communications, and DG GROWTH, in charge of SMEs and entrepreneurship, as well as various MEPs. StartUp Europe Awards Alliance comes to live as a collaborative union in which its members act following principles based in best practices to reach the following objectives:

  • Reward StartUp Awards organisers’ contribution to the entrepreneurship.
  • Offer visibility to the excellence and talent of the European start-ups through its participation in the StartUp Europe Awards.
  • Promoting the creation of start-ups, also supporting the already existing ecosystems.
  • Encouraging different entities to organise events and awards for start-ups.

To achieve the former objectives, the Alliance aims at creating a forum for the interchange of best practices, also aiming at contributing to the creation of synergies among its members, thus promoting networking and interconnection of start-ups ecosystems, aiming at developing a net of StartUp Awards organisers.

Therefore, with the inclusion of the StartUp Awards Ireland in the StartUp Europe Awards Alliance, the former gains European scope thus increasing its impact.
